Both Thaksin and Pita heading to Udon Thani for local election

BOTH de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra and Pita Limjaroenrat, former leader of Move Forward Party, which was dissolved then reborn as People’s Party, are heading for Udon Thani to give support to their respective camp’s candidates running for chairman of the Provincial Administration Organisation with the local election taking place on Sunday Nov. 24, Naewna newspaper said today (Nov. 7).

Deputy Prime Minister/Digital Economy and Society Minister Prasert Chantararungthong said Thaksin will be visiting Udon Thani during Nov. 13-14  but he does not think he will be helping campaign for Pheu Thai’s candidate because there are specific details to do so.

Thaksin would probably be there to encourage the party’s candidate, Mr. Sarawut Petchpanomporn, because he has been this camp’s MP for several terms and is well-known in the province.

Asked by reporters if Thaksin’s visit could be considered a major move in the Northeastern arena, Prasert said Thaksin is familiar with the people of Udon Thani and probably wants to visit them.

“We have to understand that Thaksin was abroad and has only just returned. He probably wants to travel to many places because he is concerned about the people,” Prasert said.

Asked whether this could be considered a test of strength because Pita too has announced that he will be returning from US to support People’s candidate in this election, Prasert said he did not want people to look at it that way and there would not be any conflicts or confrontation.

A large number of People’s MPs and rank and file members will be heading to Udon Thani to campaign for the party’s candidate, Mr. Kanisorn Kurirang, during Nov. 15-17 with Pita, who has been barred from politics for 10 years, there to give support.

Asked if Thaksin was worried about another complaint being filed against him for helping Pheu Thai’s candidate, Prasert replied that he was not worried.
