First batch of 2,000 cattle being exported to Vietnam

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

THE FIRST BATCH of 2,000 cattle is scheduled for export from Thailand to Vietnam next month, a government official confirmed today (Jan.19).

The 2,000 cattle are currently being groomed for next month’s shipment on seagoing liners from Petchaburi to Quy Nhon in Vietnam, according to the official of the Ministry of Agriculture & Cooperatives.

Petchaburi is home to 100-plus livestock farms which currently raise a combined total of about 8,500 cattle with many more being anticipated in the future.

The export-bound livestock will be officially certified by the Department of Livestock Development as farm produce free of leanness-enhancing agents, foot and mouth diseases and lumpy skin diseases, the official said.

All cattle are legally bound to undergo a quarantine process prior to shipment abroad. Quarantine units for cattle are open in Thayang and Kaeng Krachan districts of the western province.

Thailand has potential for a combined supply of some 2,000 cattle to Middle East countries, China and Vietnam on a monthly basis.

Meanwhile, former agriculture & cooperatives minister Chalermchai Sri-on called on the authorities to stop the smuggling of Myanmar cattle across the Thai-Myanmar border in Tak by black-marketing merchants who have allegedly colluded with bribe-taking government officials stationed in northwestern border areas.

The Myanmar cattle smuggling has already led to the price of domestic livestock dropping whilst those of animal feed have increased.
