Chiang Rai farmers call for crackdown on smuggling of Myanmar cattle

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

FARMERS IN CHIANG RAI have called for a stepped-up crackdown on the smuggling of cattle from Myanmar resulting in a sharp decline in the selling prices of their domestic livestock.

The cattle-raising villagers of Doi Larn area in the capital district of the northern province confirmed today (Dec.19) herds of cattle have been illegally brought by unknown smugglers across the border from Shan State of Myanmar into Chiang Rai since the last several months.

The smuggled cattle have literally waded in a shallow Sai River during dry season to sneak into Mae Fah Luang and Mae Sai districts of the northern province.

The farmers called on the authorities to step up measures against the cross-border smuggling of the Myanmar cattle which has drastically plummeted the selling prices of their own cattle which had earlier sold for as much as 30,000 baht to 50,000 baht per head in the domestic markets.

Certain livestock merchants have allegedly connived with the smugglers and lowered the prices of the domestic cattle to a range of 5,000 baht to 20,000 baht per head today, given easy access to the smuggled ones, the Doi Larn farmers said.

In addition to the cattle illegally brought in across the border from Myanmar, a large volume of pork has also been smuggled from the western neighbouring country, especially through natural border paths in Mae Hong Son and Tak.
