A RIVER-CROSSING HAUL of a few tonnes of raw rubber from Myanmar was seized and eight smuggling suspects were arrested in Ranong today (Dec.28), police said.
Troops from the 25th Infantry Regiment arrested the suspected smugglers, two Thai nationals and six Myanmar nationals for alleged involvement in the illegal haul of the 2.7-tonne rubber sheets across Kraburi River on the Thai-Myanmar border in Kraburi district of the southern province via a long-tailed motorboat.
The suspected smugglers had barely unloaded the Myanmar rubber sheets onto two pickup trucks parked near the river bank when the army troops showed up in the raid.
One of the Thai pickup truck drivers escaped from the scene whilst the other was arrested alongside a Thai female who had allegedly bought the contraband from an unknown merchant in the neighbouring country.
The six Myanmar males had been allegedly hired by the woman vendor, a native of Kraburi district.
