INSENSE rainfall lasting hours today (Aug. 23) led to the border city Mae Sot, just across from Myawaddy in Myanmar, being swamped by a second round of flash floods in just 48 hours, Amarin TV said.

Torrential rain that started late afternoon continued for hours leading to a massive amount of muddy forest runoff gushing into streams that crisscross this city. Within minutes of this huge surge Mae Sot-Tak road, specifically the intersection in front of the municipal office, and Mae Sot-Mae Tao road got inundated. Floodwaters reached 30-40cm, making it difficult for all types of vehicles to pass through.
Meanwhile, at the Mae Sot market area, which is this city’s key economic zone, flash floods inundated several communities. Vendors mobilised their workers to quickly build sandbag barriers to prevent floodwaters from flowing into their shops amid the continuous rainfall.
With floodwaters again sweeping through, Mr. Kantapong Pipatmontrikul, Mae Sot district chief, along with Mr. Kul Kreuawira, the mayor of Mae Sot municipality, and a combined force of Mae Sot District Volunteer Defence Corps Unit 3, plus municipal disaster prevention officials and other relevant parties, urgently assisted residents in all affected communities.
Officials were ordered to monitor water levels at all high-risk areas and warn residents of the flood situation around the clock.
