Two more flood fatalities in Nan and Mae Hong Son provinces

WHILE the severe flooding in northern Nan province started to ease today (Aug. 21) another man drowned in the floodwaters taking the provincial death toll to three while a fourth man died in similarly flooded northern Mae Hong Son province with red flags also raised in Phitsanulok and Phetchabun provinces, TV Channel 7 and Amarin TV said this evening (Aug. 21).

After the water level of Pa Sak river exceeded seven metres Lom Sam municipality in Phetchabun raised a red flag to warn residents in low-lying areas to move their belongings to higher ground and beware of electrical leaks. The district has also prepared water pumps and sandbags to cope with looming floods in the community.

Similar action was taken in Phitsanulok’s Wang Thong district.

Yesterday’s flash floods in Sukhothai province receded today with accumulated rainfall in the past 24 hours being less than 200 millimetres and the water level in the Yom River is still far from its banks, but it remains necessary to monitor the rainfall.

Flooding has eased in many areas of Nan province particularly Pua district with residents starting to clean up and wash away the mud, but officials continue to watch the rain.

Floodwaters have also receded in Nan city district, but residents remain cautious being concerned that further rainfall could trigger a new round of flooding. Many families have therefore not yet moved their belongings back from higher ground.

The Phetkasem Foundation said Nan’s third fatality occurred in Thawang Pha district. The unidentified deceased man was aged approximately 40-50 years old. His body has been sent for autopsy, identification, and to locate relatives.

Meanwhile in Mae Hong Son province, Mr. Worasak Panthong, Mae Sariang district chief, revealed that heavy rainfall over the past two days (Aug. 20-21) led to flash floods and rivers overflowing in many areas.

Preliminary damage data shows six subdistricts with 53 villages are inundated affecting a total of 23,050 people and 10,450 households. Mr. Boonchuey Panyakijtragul, 56, a resident of Ban Mae Sawan Noi, Mae Ho subdistrict died in the floods.
