THE House of Representatives Public Health Committee pressured agencies to provide information on hospitals involved in the “fake fathers and mothers” scandal threatening to summon them for clarification if they drag their feet on this issue, PPTVHD36 said today (Aug. 22).
Mr. Sakoltee Phatthiyakul, a Democrat MP and this camp’s deputy leader who is this House committee’s chairperson, said his panel is currently facing limitations as it delves into the “fake fathers and mothers” scandal wherein suspects falsely claim foreign children as their own so that they could obtain Thai citizenship.
These agencies are concerned about revealing the names of hospitals suspected to have been involved in this scandal but this panel wants to summon them for questioning.
In Bangkok it is estimated there are over 500 men who had agreed to be “fake fathers” with the committee still awaiting documents about them.
“The objective is to find those responsible, as this cannot simply be a matter of making arrests, fining, and then silence. Such actions are often carried out in organised groups and the committee wants to thoroughly pursue this matter,” he said.
Once information is obtained from these agencies it will be forwarded to relevant agencies such the Anti-Money Laundering Office to investigate the source of funding for these schemes so as to eradicate illicit funds flowing into every sector, including public health.
Sakoltee pointed out that the committee’s request is not politically motivated, but aimed at solving the problem. However, if normal requests are unsuccessful, relevant laws can be used to summon or invite these agencies every week.
He affirmed his committee’s commitment to pursuing the issue of “fake fathers and mothers” to the end, as it is believed illicit funds are flowing into every process.
Regarding Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt having ordered all 50 districts to check household registration records and report the number of migrant residents holding pink ID cards registered therein, the complete information obtained today shows that there are 16,634 migrants registered in 10,066 households.
A detailed analysis revealed that while normal residency criteria were met in most areas, nine districts had 13 household registrations with more than 16 migrants holding pink ID cards residing in each of them. However the relevant district offices reported that these were factories, dormitories, or labour rental housing.
Pol. Gen. Adisorn Ngamjitsukri, Chadchart’s adviser, said the next step is for the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to assign a special task force from the Department of Provincial Administration and Registration to conduct a more in-depth investigation. This will consider each case individually, including the use of the house, the actual number of residents, the relationships between those listed in the household registration, and relevant documents and evidence regarding relocation notifications.
