Facebook page spotlights sign at a Phuket shop barring Israeli tourists

THAI social media users flocked in to comment after the Phuket Times Facebook page posted an image of a sign in front of a shop on the island that bars Israelis from entering, Naewna newspaper said today (Aug. 22).

The shopkeeper said “I was once verbally abused by Israelis in front of my shop. I cursed back that time, but my intention in putting up the sign is to prevent future problems arising from among #Jewish tourists.”

This Facebook page had previously said that they are preparing to submit a letter to the authorities to investigate Israeli nationals at Patong beach following alleged widespread dissatisfaction with their “arrogant” behaviour, including chasing away locals and barring outsiders from their zone believed to have been acquired through nominee networks.

Shortly after the Phuket Times shared this post, netizens flooded the comments section with their opinions, such as the following:

“I think you did the right thing by preventing it from the start.”

“Excellent! We would do the same.”

“Very good. That’s right.”

“Start with shop number 1, then shops number 2, 3, 4, 5, and so on, until every shop in Phuket is affected. We Thais must not let foreigners take advantage of and bully us. We don’t welcome people with bad manners.”

“Thais must be united. Unity is strength.”

“Do this at every shop.”

“Good job. Government agencies are weak, so it’s time for ordinary citizens to fight for themselves.”

“Love this! We should support this.”

“Sending encouragement to the people of Phuket. Since the police, local administration, ISOC, etc., can’t be relied upon, you must be your own support. Unite, stick together, and resist strongly.

“If you weaken, you will end up like the Palestinians.”
