THE STRONGEST earthquake in several years reaching 6.4 magnitude shook the whole of Myanmar’s Shan state at 8.37 a.m. Thai time this morning (Nov. 17) with tremors being felt in many northern Thai provinces, Naewna newspaper said.
The Thai Meteorological Department’s Earthquake Observation Division said the centre of the quake, with a depth of nine kilometres, was 100 kms to the north of Chiang Rai’s Mae Sai district.
The quake was clearly felt in many northern Thai provinces including Chiang Rai, Phayao and Chiang Mai with houses shaking and loud noises heard as various equipment vibrated while many people started feeling dizzy.
People in high-rise buildings such as hospitals, schools and colleges quickly ran out and gathered in the open air.
At an office on the 10th floor of Chaeng Prasit building in Bangkok’s Lak Si district workers said office furniture and curtains shook when the quake struck and some of them became dizzy.
However as there were only a few aftershocks the situation quickly returned to normal.
