A PROMINENT virologist said today (Oct. 19) that some patients in Thailand have been infected with both Covid-19 and influenza at the same time and those who fall seriously sick should get tested for both of them, Matichon newspaper said.
Dr. Yong Poovorawan, head of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, said in his Facebook post that when several respiratory viruses spread at the same time it is possible to be co-infected with Covid-19 and flu.
Laboratory tests conducted when both Covid-19 and flu viruses were spreading heavily have shown co-infection in some patients.
This is particularly possible when both viruses surged in a large group of people.
It necessitates testing seriously ill patients for both Covid-19 and flu in order to correctly treat them with there being medicines for both illnesses.
However Dr. Yong also mentioned that it has been observed that co-infected patients have not developed more severe symptoms but more studies have to be carried out.
