A POLICEMAN who just got off duty and was riding his motorcycle home drowned in Makkasan pond at 2 a.m. today (Oct. 20) after crashing into the barrier of a bridge at Chaturathit road, Matichon newspaper said.
Pol. Lt. Wisanu Poonjang, a deputy inspector at Din Daeng police station, rushed to the accident site together with Ruamkatanyu Foundation rescuers and a forensic doctor from Ramathibodi Hospital.
At the bridge of this four-lane road they found the tipped over motorcycle which Pol. Lt Col. Thongplew Hanpaiboon, 41, was riding that had strongly collided with the bridge’s barrier, sending him flying into the pond.
After rescuers pulled his body from the pond it was discovered that he was a deputy superintendent at Metropolitan Division 5 and had injured his chin before plunging into the water.
Residents in this area told police that the deceased policeman was riding his motorcycle along this road from Phaya Thai and heading for Mae Phra intersection. When he reached the curve taking him to the bridge, with this area being dark as there were no lights, his bike crashed into the barrier.
They added that at that time there was no traffic at all on this road.
Moreover riders have frequently lost control of their motorcycle and crashed in this spot with the local residents able to pull some of them from the pond with most being badly injured.
Pol. Lt Col. Thongplew was from Phitsanulok province and aside from his regular duties also gave lectures on carrying out investigations.
