PRIME MINISTER-cum-Finance Minister Srettha Thavisin said upon arriving at Suvarnabhumi Airport from New York at 7.30 a.m. this morning (Sep. 24) that he will be holding talks with more American companies when he joins the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (Apec) summit in San Francisco during Nov. 11-17, 2023, Matichon newspaper said.
While attending the 78th UN General Assembly Sustainable Development Goals (UNGA78 SDGs) summit Srettha held talks with top executives of Goldman Sachs, Estee Lauder, Microsoft, Google, Tesla Inc. and SpaceX, with the first four showing interest in investing here.
Srettha mentioned that Thai businessmen too will get an opportunity to hold talks with executives of top American companies during the Apec summit.
He pointed out that he held talks with American companies in two sectors – industrial and finance. The latter is vital if foreign companies are to invest here as they would need financial support.
Be it Thai companies investing in US or US companies investing here a strong middleman well-versed in all aspects of finance is needed to back them.
In this regard both Citibank and J.P. Morgan have all the licences to operate in Thailand.
Srettha also mentioned that the top executive of J.P.Morgan told him that while they had all the required licences they had not expanded significantly in Thailand but would look into what could be done next.
As for Citibank, which has years-long relationship with Thailand, their executive said he would go and see which areas they could lend support.
“As for Goldman Sachs, it has never established a company in Thailand. It’s just a small company operating mainly from Singapore. In my discussion with their executive he said if there is a lot of international investment it would be worthwhile in future to set up an office here,” he said.
