Chonlanan’s resignation as Pheu Thai leader seen as a soap opera

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

THE ELECTORAL CAMPAIGN PROMISE earlier made by Chonlanan Srikaew to resign as Pheu Thai leader today (Aug.30) was likened to a scene of a soap opera shown on air as though it could have somehow entertained public viewers, according to Move Forward MP/spokesman Rangsiman Rome.

Chonlanan’s resignation as Pheu Thai leader, albeit known as an entirely nominal, powerless role as far as de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra is concerned, was comparable to a soap opera series which was by no means seen by the people as a solemn commitment of such a politician, Rangsiman commented.

It was an ultimate irony for him to leave a partisan post for a ministerial one though his party had deliberately failed to keep their campaign promises earlier given to the people to never deal with the “uncles’ camps”, according to the Move Forward spokesman.

During an electoral campaign nationwide, Chonlanan had earlier pledged to resign as Pheu Thai leader if his party eventually joined ranks with any “uncles’ camps” after the May 14 election.

At a later date, he remarked that such promises were merely a tongue in cheek which, he said, may have probably occurred during electoral campaigns.

That referred to the Palang Pracharath led by Prawit “Uncle Pom” Wongsuwan and the Ruam Thai Sang Chart under de facto party boss/caretaker prime minister Prayut “Uncle Tu” Chan-o-cha, both of which have jumped onto the bandwagon of the Pheu Thai-led coalition government.

Ironically, Chonlanan has been named public health minister in the Pheu Thai-led coalition government under Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, leaving the people more or less puzzled at his keeping his word so superficially instead of taking a solemn, yet belated act of protest against the surprise event in which the “uncles camps” have been brought into government, according to the Move Forward spokesman
