THE widely-followed Panda Lab Doctor Facebook page warned people to not eat bats after a woman who frequently posts video clips about food shared one showing herself eating them, TV Channel 7 said today (Nov. 8).
Mr. Pakphum Dejhassadin, a medical technologist who runs the popular Panda Lab Doctor page, said he saw a picture of this woman eating bats and then traced it to her video clip where she ate one of them with delight, dipping it in sauce and also enjoying the soup.
He warned that bats are a source of germs and carry over 60 types of viruses and people should stop messing around with them and learn from the global Covid-19 pandemic.
Some people have learned nothing at all from the global Covid pandemic, he said, pointing out that although the bats are cooked the process of capturing and slaughtering them can infect humans who in turn could spread diseases to others.
Viruses accumulate in blood, saliva and organs and when we touch them with our hands after which accidentally touch our face or eyes or a small cut or wound we could get infected and spread a disease around the world.
Among the viruses that accumulate in bats are Ebola, SARS, MERS, Nipah that causes encephalitis and of course the coronavirus which triggered a pandemic that killed millions of people and led to a global economic downturn.
Later in the day Dr. Kaset Sutecha, a lecturer at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Kasetsart University, also said he has warned many times over the past month that eating bats is inappropriate because they are the source of the coronavirus that led to Covid-19.
He is concerned that eating them could trigger another pandemic because bats accumulate a lot of germs with over 60 types of viruses having been found in them.
He urged people to not forget that Covid-19 spread from bats to humans in Wuhan, China, and that eating them is also a violation of Wildlife Preservation and Protection Act B.E. 2562.
