Chadchart: Of 83 problematic pubs in Bangkok, 49 are in Chatuchak

BANGKOK Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said today (August 7) that safety checks of all local service outlets to ensure adequate and functional fire exits had found 83 pubs with problems with as many as 49 being in Chatuchak district, Matichon newspaper said.

A report on the safety checks is submitted to him on the 5th of every month and while some had been closed others had made the necessary alterations.

“Today I will check again whether all 83 places have corrected the problems or not. All 83 may not have been closed but corrective action taken.

“They are spread out in multiple districts, and it’s interesting, for example in Phra Khanong district there is one but in Chatuchak 49, in Don Mueang one, in Din Daeng four, in Thawi Watthana one, in Thonburi five, in Bang Kapi one, in Bang Khun Thian one and in Bang Khae two.

“They are not evenly divided among the districts because some districts have been focusing on this issue and have already closed them.

“These 83 places will be reviewed to see whether they are okay or not, the problems have to be solved according to the regulations and if not they will be closed.

“It is fortunate that we did this prior to the tragic fire at Sattahip, Chonburi (Mountain B pub inferno where 15 pubgoers died and 37 were injured). This provided us with some information and intensive action must be accelerated,” he said.

Asked whether all the 83 pubs were closed during renovations, he replied that he had to check again and if the problems cannot be resolved then they must be closed but many had already been closed. However the permanent secretary will tomorrow reveal how many of them had been shut and what corrective actions had been taken.

Asked why so many pubs in Chatuchak area were found to be problematic, Chadchart replied that it was strange that there were so many service outlets in this district that were not up to standard.

Pol. Gen. Adis Ngamsuksri, an adviser to Bangkok governor, said police are working closely with the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority to ensure the safety of entertainment venues in the capital

He added that renewal of the licence comes under the authority of Metropolitan Police according to the Metropolitan Police Act but Bangkok Metropolitan Authority is allowed under the Public Health Act to check about the food and the playing of music.
