AFTER images of revellers merrily splashing water on Khao San road were published by the Thai press Gen. Suphot Malaniyom, secretary-general of the National Security Council and director of operations at the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) told the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) and Interior Ministry officials to resolve the problem, TV Channel 7 said today (Apr. 14).
He underscored that Khao San road is a public area and splashing water and engaging in water fights is not allowed this Songkran with only traditional ways of observing the festival being permitted.
BMA will be holding a meeting today to ensure measures approved by CCSA are upheld, he said, while pointing out that most people across the country are doing so because they are aware of the necessity of reducing the risk of Covid infection and clusters emerging.
Yet he said he did not want to ruin the atmosphere of happiness and this important tourism event while hoping no more photos of people splashing water are spread today as happened yesterday.
Meanwhile Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha urged people to observe the Songkran guidelines while also recommending that they watch out for any signs of Covid infection upon returning from their holidays. Should they have any symptoms they should quickly take an ATK test with working from home being the best step to prevent Covid spreading at the moment.
