THE daily tally of coronavirus deaths reached a new high at 34 this morning (May 12) with there being an additional 1,983 cases among whom is newly-released protest leader Ms. Panusaya Sitthichirawattanakul, or Rung, TV Channel 7 and Amarin TV said.
According to the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) the new batch of cases raised the cumulative confirmed total to 88,907 while the 34 more deaths pushed up the total death toll to 486.
Another 2,006 patients have been cured, adding up to 57,214 who have recovered, while 29,378 are still undergoing treatment with 1,226 in severe condition and 401 using ventilators.
Of today’s 1,983 cases, 1,328 emerged in the service system while 646 were found through proactive search in communities. Nine overseas arrivals were placed in state quarantine.
An update on coronavirus vaccination is as follows:
Another 6,021 people got the first jab, adding up to 1,372,013 who have done so;
An additional 31,090 people got their second jab, with 563,552 having now completed the course.
Meanwhile globally at 10 a.m. this morning there were 160,339,530 cases with 138,118,573 patients cured and 3,331,763 deaths.
Panusaya, or Rung, posted a message on her Facebook page this morning that she just found out that she has been infected with coronavirus after being released from Central Women Correctional Institution on May 6.
She added that she is immediately being treated at Thammasat Hospital and apologised to all those she came into close contact with.
She also mentioned that until last night she had no symptoms whatsoever and mostly stayed home except for going out twice, once for a swab test and the second time to the prison to get the test result.
In another development the Volleyball Association of Thailand said that 22 athletes, trainers and staff of the Thai national volleyball team had got infected with coronavirus. The team is now withdrawing from the National League Volleyball Tournament taking place during May 25-June 19, 2021 in Italy.
The infection had spread from four sports science officials who tested positive on May 10. After that all 37 athletes and staff were tested and now 22 have been found to be infected.
