Sex for grades scandal shakes education system

ANOTHER scandal is rocking the Thai education system after the sister of a final year high school student revealed text messages from a teacher negotiating sex for grades with her brother, Sanook.com and Channel 3 television news reported today (Oct. 1, 2020).

In the chat between the male teacher of a famous private school in Surat Thani with the male high school student and brother of the woman who shared the screenshots is an indecent soliciting of sex for grades and passing the exam.

The student had told his sister that he chatted with the teacher like other friends who had passed the exam while he was not able to and it seemed the teacher would not let him pass.

The Facebook user posted this comment:

“Is this okay? Is he really a teacher? Just like this, exchange for grades like this? Society is deteriorating everyday because of such people. The issue arose because my brother did not pass the exam but to exchange for grades and points in this manner?”

Channel 3 television’s evening news programme reported that the parents of the male student had already met the school administrators and also lodged a complaint with the education institute committee on September 24 but there was no progress and they were afraid the issue would die out.

It has been found out that at least three other high school students had been treated in this manner by a teacher and evidence is now being collected.

The school director has now agreed to set a committee to investigate the facts about this incident while the teacher resigned this morning.

This scandal follows another one where a young teacher at Sarasas Witaed Ratchaphruek School in Nonthaburi was seen in a video clip abusing first-year kindergarten students, pulling the hair of one of them and pushing another to the ground, with this going viral online and leading to an investigation.

Police later filed charges against the teacher, Ornuma “Khru Jum” Plodprong, 30, who was sacked from the large private school.
