WITH Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha concerned about the ease with which children and youths can reach online gambling websites, police are moving to crackdown hard on such activities, Siam Rath newspaper reported today (Sept. 27, 2020).
The police together with the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society and the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission last Wednesday September 23 asked Internet Service Providers (ISP) and mobile phone operators to quickly block access to a total a total 1,202 gambling websites.
Two court orders, one for 982 websites and the other 220 websites, had been submitted to these companies to cut off access to these gambling portals within 15 days or else they will face action under Section 27 of the Computer Crimes Act and the Gambling Act.
Research shows that people who gamble online tend to be more addicted and likely to lose more money that those playing offline. Gambling via mobile phone makes it even easier to lose money.
The authorities therefore urge all agencies involved, both public and private, to cooperate in taking tough action against these websites.
