A DRAMATIC scene unfolded in Phuket as a mysterious whirlwind struck Kata beach, sending beach umbrellas and sunbeds flying as tourists scrambled to safety, Amarin TV said this evening (Nov. 3).
A viral video clip shared on Facebook by Bualoy Chimphithak shows intense, swirling winds sweeping across this beach at 11 a.m. scattering umbrellas, sunbeds, and other items, causing panic among tourists and those present in the area.
The video captures the whirlwind lifting objects into the air and tossing them about. Strong gusts are clearly visible throughout the scene, forcing everyone on the beach to remain on high alert—a truly harrowing sight for those who witnessed it.
Following the release of the video, many social media users commented on the incident. Remarks included:
-“That’s terrifying—is this where you work?”
– “It’s a ‘headless’ whirlwind—often appearing alongside sea breezes.”
– “I’m worried someone might get impaled by a metal umbrella pole—why aren’t they running?”
– “Goodness! Those umbrella poles could easily strike someone. This is absolutely terrifying—was anyone injured?”
This incident highlights the intensity of the winds along the beach, which could pose a danger to both tourists and beach vendors—particularly as lightweight items or beach equipment might be blown away. Consequently, extra caution should be exercised during periods of strong gusts.
Meanwhile the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) issued an alert for 61 provinces and Bangkok to prepare for thunderstorms and strong winds, with a specific warning for the southern region to remain vigilant for heavy to very heavy rainfall between Nov. 5 and 9.
The department has coordinated with 61 provinces across the Northern, Northeastern, Central, and Southern regions, as well as Bangkok, to monitor volatile weather conditions in upper Thailand and the potential for heavy to very heavy rainfall in the South during this period.
Authorities have been instructed to notify residents in high-risk areas, mobilise disaster-response equipment, maintain constant monitoring, and ensure readiness to provide assistance to the public 24 hours a day.
