SHORTLY after a car bomb blast in Far South Narathiwat province late last month slightly injured one official followed by an attack on a checkpoint that killed five rangers and injured six civilians the next day an improvised explosive device (IED) that was planted in an official vehicle was set off this evening (Aug. 4) but fortunately there were no injuries, Amarin TV said.
The car bomb blast occurred approximately 6.45 p.m. in Dusongyo subdistrict, Chanae district, of this southern border province damaging the vehicle, but initially, no officials or civilians were injured.
Following the explosion, police, military, and local authorities cordoned off the area for security. Explosive Ordnance Disposal and forensic teams were called to the scene to investigate thoroughly, gather evidence, and apprehend the perpetrators.
Authorities request the public to avoid the area and closely follow official announcement as the investigation and clearing of the area are still ongoing.
Earlier at 11.40 a.m. two assailants dressed as Muslim women riding a motorcycle slowed down in front of the Excise Department Office in Pattani and opened fire injuring a woman who had been brought there to pay a fine.
When a police team arrived, they saw a pool of blood on the ground in the front office and quickly cordoned off the area. The injured woman, identified as Ms. Nurhayati (surname withheld), 21, who was hit with two M16 rifle shots on her right chest had already been taken to Mayo Hospital and later transferred to Pattani Hospital.
Eleven M16 shell casings were found at the scene and collected as evidence.
Nurhayati had been brought there to pay a fine in a contraband cigarette case and just 10 minutes after arriving the two assailants dressed as women opened fire. Officials scrambled for cover but as she was sitting on a chair in the front office she was hit.
The car bomb that went off at Narathiwat’s old Tanyong police station on July 21 had been rigged with two IEDs while a group of six insurgents dressed as security personnel had mounted the attack on the checkpoint that killed five rangers and injured six civilians the next day.
