IN PROTESTING the attack on Thai-flagged bulk carrier “Mayuree Naree” in the Strait of Hormuz yesterday (Mar. 11) the Thai Foreign Affairs Ministry summoned Iranian Ambassador Nassereddin Heidari to a meeting to discuss and ascertain the facts of the incident, TV Channel 7 said this afternoon.
Mr. Panidol Patchimsawat, the ministry’s deputy spokesperson, said Foreign Affairs Minister Sihasak Phuangketkeow will also be holding a telephone conversation with his Omani counterpart, Badr al-Busaidi, to thank his country for rescuing 20 of 23 crew members and searching for the remaining three still missing.
All 20 rescued crew members are safe and uninjured with the ministry having arranged a visit and provided psychiatrists for mental health support, and is making arrangements for their return to Thailand. The search for the three missing crew members is ongoing, and the facts are being investigated.
Furthermore, the Transport Ministry’s Marine Department confirmed that all Thai-flagged vessels have now left the Strait of Hormuz, with there being no Thai cargo ships stranded in the area.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry has issued a second statement reiterating its grave concern over the escalating war in the Middle East, stemming from attacks by Israel and the United States and retaliation by Iran.
This has had widespread impacts, including the incident involving the Thai cargo ship, with all parties urged to exercise utmost restraint, immediately de-escalate tensions, and return to negotiations.
The ministry also protested attacks on merchant ships and expressed its deepest concern over this matter.
