MEMBERS of a House security committee chaired the People’s MP Rangsiman Rome said during a visit to Phu Makhuea peak at Sisaket border today (Oct. 5) that Thai troops must be well-armed as Cambodia is phasing in weapons purchased from China, PPTVHD 36 said this evening.
The House Committee on Security, Border Affairs, National Strategies & National Reform members were briefed by Lt. Col. Chakkrit Khurirang, commander of the 11th Infantry Battalion stationed there and was the person who planted the Thai flag at the peak when it was recaptured from Khmer troops.
Thailand has fully recaptured Phu Makhuea, including the part where Cambodian troops had built a cable car to the peak, and they are now stationed below. But these units are being reinforced and Thai soldiers are constantly monitoring the situation. Based on their assessment, any resupply to this area by Khmers is deemed potential invasion with Thai troops preparing for any future situations.
There are problems besetting the route to Phu Makheau but these have now been resolved for an eight-kilometre distance to allow for resupply but further improvement is required, he said.
Rangsiman said that Phu Makhuea is a strategically important location and provides a clear view of Cambodian movements. If any irregularities arise, the Thai side would be aware of them.
Of concern is that should another armed conflict erupt, Phu Makheua may be one of the first locations affected. Cambodian drones are intermittently flying around this area and the Thai side must prepare for any situation in the short term.
The House committee is prioritising the following issues:
1/ Road and logistics support – these must be as good as possible and there will likely be further discussions with the government on how to proceed;
2/ Adequate food and drink is also important – efforts are already being made to manage this well;
3/ Defensive and offensive weapons – these include anti-drone systems as Cambodia is about to phase in using weapons purchased from China. Thailand must send a signal that the country is ready as this will ensure optimal security.
