Thai-Cambodian border completely quiet according to midnight deadline

GUNS fell silent along the Thai-Cambodian border at midnight sharp except for Trat where clashes continued for another half an hour then stopped but there were fierce clashes during the last ten minutes with Thai F-16 fighter jets also bombarding Khmer positions, Amarin TV said this morning (July 29).

The ceasefire agreed upon by Thai acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Malaysia yesterday is now holding up at all combat zones where the troops of the two countries fought for five days as follows:

– Buriram province: Chong Sai Taku area;

–  Surin province: Prasat Ta Muen Thom and Prasat Ta Kwai temples plus Chon Chom area;

– Sisaket province: Preah VihearTemple (Phu Makhuea, Huai Ta Maria) and Prasat Don Tual area;

– Ubon Ratchathani province: Chong An Ma area and Chong Bok.

However Thai and Cambodian troops clashed fiercely in the last 10 minutes to midnight with Cambodian troops mounting an attack with heavy weapons. Thai air force scrambled two F-16 fighter jets to bombard Prasat Ta Khwai Temple area and cut off the route for supporting forces to move in with aircraft returning to base safely.

Cambodian forces had encroached on Thai territory in Trat and heavy fighting continued till 00.32 a.m. after which the navy posted a message online that the gunfire had stopped.
