8 migrant workers set free after being cleared of involvement in rally

EIGHT workers from a neighbouring country who were detained near Victory Monument where a big national unity rally took place today (June 28) have been released after being found to have entered Thailand legally and were not involved in the demonstration, TV Channel 7 said this evening.

Pol. Maj. Gen. Noppasin Poolsawat, deputy chief of Metropolitan Police, said an investigation team questioned all eight of them while the Immigration Bureau also checked their background and travel documents.

It was found that they had all entered the country legally and had valid work permits. Furthermore, there were no arrest warrants for any of them nor are they on the Immigration Bureau’s watchlist.

They also had no connection with Cambodia, with there currently being tension along the border between the two countries.

All eight gave consistent statements that they reached Bangkok at 10 a.m. this morning to collect items at a nearby work site. After finishing packing, they travelled back to their accommodation via Vibhavadi Rangsit road to get on the Din Daeng expressway. However as the traffic was quite congested they diverted to enter the expressway from another ramp and were then stopped by the police.
