AFTER a few explosives and bomb-like devices were found in Phang Nga, Krabi and Phuket this week, another bomb was found next to the fence of Phang Nga Governor’s residence this evening (June 26), Naewna newspaper said.
Mr. Phairat Petsuwan, governor of the coastal province next to Phuket, has stepped up security mobilising officers to inspect and patrol risk areas, including residential areas and tourist attractions, to prevent any incident and reassure residents.
A police team, along with officials and defence volunteers, then found a suspicious object with unusual characteristics near the fence of the governor’s residence, with this on the outside looking like artificial rocks.
Initial inspection showed that these seemingly rocks held an explosive device connected to a circuit board that was live and had a dangerous radius of 10 metres.
The area was cordoned off and the Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team safely detonated the device before sending it to the Central Institute of Forensic Science for further detailed examination.
Pol. Col. Wiraphong Rakkhito, superintendent of Phang Nga provincial police station, said information obtained from two men who were caught driving in Phang Nga with a bomb stashed in their sedan before dawn last Tuesday enabled the police team to accurately identify the location of the suspicious object.
Police and defence volunteers then cordoned off the surrounding area and the device was detonated without any serious harm.
