1,200 policemen oversee Saturday’s demonstration

A TOTAL of 1,200 policemen will be deployed to control the demonstration at the Victory Monument on Saturday (June 28) with protesters urged to stay within the framework of the law and avoid affecting use of public space, Naewna newspaper said this evening (June 25).

Pol. Lt. Gen. Archayon Kraithong, a police spokesperson, said the Metropolitan Police Bureau had received a letter informing them of the rally and has coordinated with relevant agencies in arranging around 1,200 policemen to closely monitor the situation before, during, and after the rally.

Moreover, investigation units are continuously checking the movement of groups of people who may not have good intention or intend to cause unrest both in Bangkok and the provinces. Checkpoints are being set up to screen people and vehicles on main  traffic routes, including BTS stations.

The public was urged to cooperate by not travelling through the Victory Monument on that day. Those who see unusual developments or face emergencies can notify police at 191 all 24 hours a day.

Meanwhile People’s MP Rangsiman Rome said people have the constitutional right to express themselves by rallying on Saturday June 28 but they must stay within the limits of the law and not cause trouble or affect the general public.

He added that no one had contacted him or sent an invitation to join the rally and if someone did invite him he would have see whether or not he was free on that day.

Regarding Bhumjaithai collecting signatures of MPs to file a no-confidence motion against the government, Rangsiman said he did not know why this was being rushed because submitting this motion closes the door for Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to dissolve the House of Representative and hold a new election.

Even so, opposition parties would have to discuss this move because there are many steps involved and a no-confidence debate would take place because it is also the intention of People’s Party.

Although no discussions had been held with Bhumjaitahi the party leaders would have to negotiate and discuss the details with People’s Party having been acting as the opposition for two years now and had good understanding of the steps involved, Rangsiman added.
