BOTH People’s Party, the largest opposition party, and Pheu Thai Party, the core of the current coalition, criticised some leaders of yesterday’s (June 28) national unity rally at Victory Monument for talking about a coup d’etat and encouraging it, Amarin TV said today.
People’s Party posted a message on Facebook condemning leaders of “United Power of Land Group” for inciting a coup as well as excessive nationalism.
Aside from calling for Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to resign and coalition partners pulling out of the government, with these being normal demands in a democracy, it appears some of the speeches were paving the way for a coup, the party said.
“In the past 20 years, many citizens have suffered immeasurable pain. Many people have lost their lives demanding and obstructing a coup. Therefore, we would like to inform you that this party cannot accept a coup.
“People’s Party condemns the legitimisation of a coup, which is an act that seriously violates the constitution and the democratic system,” the party added.
Meanwhile Mr. Danupon Punnakan, a Pheu Thai party-list MP and spokesperson, said overall yesterday’s rally was peaceful and holding rallies is permitted by the constitution provided there is no violence and weapons used.
However Pheu Thai is both concerned and cannot accept speeches of some rally leaders who talked about a coup. It was pointed out to people who value democratic rule with the Monarch as head of state that the country cannot go through a coup again.
