Demand for Paetongtarn to step down at the national unity rally

THE national unity rally at Victory Monument grew larger this evening (June 28) as more people flocked in and those there staying put despite the heavy rain with the organisers after 6 p.m. issuing a statement calling for Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra to resign, Amarin TV said.

The atmosphere was lively with the leaders of Thai Sovereignty Defence Group taking turns to give speeches and at 6 p.m. the hundreds of people gathered there singing the national anthem together.

After that Mr. Nitithorn Lamluea, a lawyer and one of this group’s leaders, read out their statement which in parts said that since the Siamese revolution of 1932, 93 years ago, it is clear that those who run the country, whether elected, appointed or seized power by coup d’état, do not have an intention to adhere to democratic system and do not perform their duties for the benefit of the country and true happiness of the people.

This has led to widespread, deep and severe crises in the country affecting the political system, the economy, judicial process, security, international relations, morality, ethics and the society.

This is because the leaders do not care nor respect or fear the law and the rules of governance in the country, being corrupt, deceitful and distorting power making law enforcement ineffective, he said.

“They give more importance to the form and method than the basic principles of the democratic system,” he added.

Nitithorn then branded Paetongtarn as incompetent and accused her of lacking honesty and integrity while behaving in a way that violates ethical standards and for these reasons calling on her to resign immediately.

He also urged the Pheu Thai-led coalition partners to withdraw immediately and boost the morale of the military in protecting the country and join discussions on ways to solve the country’s problems according to democratic system and the governance traditions that are appropriate for the situation and identity of Thai society.
