Oil spill at Bangkok intersection after tanker overturns

A MIDNIGHT last night (May 24) a 16,000-litre oil tanker overturned in the middle of Suk Sawat intersection in Rat Burana district spilling a large amount of oil which led to the traffic being rerouted and some people living nearby evacuated, Amarin TV said.

At 00.01 a.m. Rat Burana police station was alerted of this accident and quickly called the district’s fire and rescue team to go there.

At the scene of the accident, they found the PTT Plc oil tanker that had come from Phra Phadaeng, Samut Prakan, flipped over in the middle of the intersection with the windshield shattered and spilling the 16,000 litres of oil it was carrying on the road. Firemen and rescuers quickly sprayed foam and water to prevent a fire.

The oil tanker’s driver, Mr. Somsak Voksungnern, 56, suffered minor injuries and was taken to Rat Burana Hospital for treatment.

Parked nearby and blocking Suk Sawat road was a trailer truck carrying fruit juice for delivery to the Klong Toey area driven by Mr. Somkiat Lothong, 32.

Somkiat said just as he was crossing the intersection after seeing that the light was still green, with his carcam having filmed that there was still two seconds left, the oil tanker suddenly cut in front.

However, Somsak maintains that he turned to Rat Burana road when the light was green, but the other party did not see that which led to the accident.

Police are checking CCTV clips and will be questioning both drivers further at the station.

It was later found that of the 16,000 litres of oil the tanker was carrying 3,000 litres had flowed onto the road and rescuers and firemen rushed to spray foam to prevent more from doing so.

After that approximately 150 people living nearby were told to move to a safe area until the oil spill is cleared.
