A YOUNG MAN who was voting in today’s (May 11) election for mayor and councillors of Pho Ngam subdistrict, Prachantakham district, Prachin Buri province, got arrested after being seen taking photos of himself marking the ballot, Amarin TV said.
The person who saw Mr. Chatchai (surname withheld), 28, taking these photos reported him to officials because he feared this could be vote buying or some other violation of the election law.
There is fierce competition between two candidates running for mayor here, namely Mr. Ekkachai Kriangthanabodi, number 1, and Mr. Banthoeng Panyadee, number 2, and it was reported that votes were being bought for 3,000 baht each.
At the police station Chatchai said he took photos for fun and he also tested positive for drugs. He was charged with violating local election law.
In Khon Kaen where a similar local election is taking place in Mueang district, another man was stopped from taking photos of himself voting, TV Channel 7 said.
Upon being questioned by police he said,”They said to take photos as proof of coming to vote.”
He got a warning that doing this was illegal and was allowed to continue voting.
