UNOFFICIAL result of the election for Chiang Mai mayor last night (May 11) showed Pheu Thai candidate and the incumbent Mr. Asani Buranupakorn had obtained 18,299 votes, leaving People’s candidate Mr. Theerawat Kaeofong trailing behind with 13,335 votes, Thai Rath newspaper said.
Asani announced his victory at Empress Hotel in Chiang Mai city where the party had opened a war room to monitor vote counting.
He thanked the people of Chiang Mai Municipality for their trust and giving him the opportunity to return to work as mayor for another term, and also thanked de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra, former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat and his wife/Thaksin’s sister Yaowapha Wongsawat as well all the party elders for their support.
Meanwhile Theerawat also thanked those who had voted for him at People’s office in Chiang Mai, urging them to not be discouraged because there are still many elections taking place in future and that he will work hard to live up to their trust in him.
At 8.20 p.m. People’s leader Mr. Nattapong Ruangpanyawut said at a press conference that unofficial results show his party has won at two Nonthaburi municipalities and one in Samut Prakan and seven sub-municipalities nationwide.
He said that overall, the local elections were satisfactory and in some areas People’s candidates lost by a few hundred votes but as the results are not official so no analysis could yet be made. Although the party lost in Chiang Mai the score had gradually increased.
