THAI DURIAN EXPORTS have continually prevailed over the Chinese market throughout last year, a government official confirmed yesterday (Jan.24).
China purchased a total of 1.42 million tonnes of durian worth US$6.71 billion from various exporting countries last year, accounting for a 72% increase in volume from 2022.
Of that total, some 928,900 tonnes of Thai durian worth about $4.56 billion was exported to China, representing a 65% market share. That compared to some 784,000 tonnes of Thai durian delivered to the same import market in 2022.
The eastern provinces of Chanthaburi, Rayong and Trat locate the country’s largest plantations of the export-bound durian.
Meanwhile, China imported 493,000 tonnes of Vietnamese durian worth about $2.13 billion, registering a 34% market share last year.
The Vietnamese durian shipped to China throughout last year remarkably accounted for a 1,107% increase in volume, compared to only about 40,800 tonnes delivered to that import market in 2022.
About 3,700 tonnes of Philippine durian worth about $13 million was also imported by the Chinese market last year.
