Scammers using police hotline number to trick victims

THE CENTRAL Investigation Bureau (CIB) police warned the public to beware of scammers duping them by using fake police emergency hotline 191 to call them and hit them with forged warrants in order to get a big payoff, Amarin TV said today (Jan. 25).

The scammers make video calls on the fake 191 hotline with the victims seeing one of them dressed as a police officer and telling them about the warrants issued against them.

Those who fall for this trick usually transfer money to get off the hook.

CIB police added that 191 is a unique number that can only receive emergency calls and not make phone calls.

Those who get such calls stating that warrants or summons had been issued against them are urged to check at a police station or the agency that allegedly issued the documents first to ensure that it is authentic so as to not fall prey to scammers.
