MORE VIETNAMESE DURIAN is expected to be exported to China throughout this year, stealing a sizable market share from Thai durian.
The China-bound export of Vietnamese durian is reportedly forecast to increase in volume and account for US$3.42 billion in value this year, according to a government official.
Vietnam exported 452,000 tonnes of durian to its largest export market for a total of $1.94 billion throughout last year. That compared to 904,000 tonnes of Thai durian shipped to the same export market worth a total of $4.42 billion.
However, the Vietnamese durian may have logistic and geographical advantages over the Thai fruit, the official said.
Last year, Thai and Vietnamese durian reportedly grabbed a 66% and 31% market share in China respectively. Vietnamese durian’s Chinese market share had sharply increased from only 3% over the last several years.
Other relatively minor rivals are from Malaysia and the Philippines.
