A BORDER PASS IN UTTARADIT is planned to be upgraded for export of a variety of fruits from northern Thailand to southwestern China via a Lao railway, a senior official confirmed today (Dec.20).

The National Bureau of Agricultural Commodity & Food Standards’ deputy secretary-general Preeyanut Thipayawat said Pudu border pass in Baan Khok district of Uttaradit will finally become an international passageway for the export of various tropical fruits from lower northern provinces to southwestern China via the railway running through Vientiane and Luang Prabang province in northern Laos.

Uttaradit has reportedly exported a total of 11,844 tons of durian, mango, longkong and tamarind combinedly worth about 1.39 billion baht from the lower northern provinces to China throughout this year, Preeyanut said.

Uttaradit is noted for a pricey Lablae durian, most of which has been harvested for China-bound export in competition with those produced in the eastern provinces of Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat.

The export of Thai goods to southwestern China via railway in northern Laos is primarily viewed as a time-saving and cost-effective approach.

In addition, Thung Chang border pass in Nan and Baan Huak border pass in Payao in the northern region are projected to become international passageways for export of farm products to China through Laos, she said.
