MOVE FORWARD LEADER/PRIME minister-designate Pita Limjaroenrat will likely be given a second chance to rise to power if he fails at the first go, according to newly-named House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha.
If the Move Forward leader/prime minister-designate eventually fails to get enough support in the first round of votes by MPs and senators in a joint House/Senate session scheduled for next week, he will likely be given a second chance to go for it in the following week, Wan Noor confirmed.
Pita will need yea votes from more than half the combined total of 500 MPs and 250 senators or at least 376 votes in accordance with the military-designed constitution. Given a combined force of 312 MPs attached to eight coalition partners, the Move Forward leader will need at least 64 more votes from among non-coalition MPs and senators.
Pita has remarked that more senators might probably endorse him for the elected premiership than earlier anticipated whilst all coalition MPs will be ultimately bound to demonstrate their unity again by voting for him next week after they already did so yesterday in support of Move Forward MP Padipat Santipada as first deputy House speaker.
His comments were made in response to sustained speculation that many of the unelected lawmakers might probably either abstain from voting at all or vote for a rival contender for prime minister who might possibly be named by a non-coalition MP against him.
Speculated to be given overwhelming support from most senators, Palang Pracharath leader Prawit Wongsuwan could possibly become a rival contender against Pita for head of a post-election government.
All 250 senators were handpicked by Prawit and de facto Ruam Thai Sang Chart boss/coup leader-turned-prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha.
