REAL ESTATE TYCOON Settha Taweesin today (July 1) called the possibility of a brand new Pheu Thai-led coalition with the Palang Pracharath and without the Move Forward a “lunatic” notion.
Though Settha, who contested last month’s election as one of a trio of Pheu Thai partisan candidates for prime minister, did not rule out such a possibility, he bluntly called it so “lunatic” nobody should pay attention to it.
The real estate tycoon who was a running mate of Paetongtarn Shinawatra, daughter of de facto Pheu Thai boss/deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, and former justice minister Chaikasem Nitisiri and known as personally close to deposed prime minister Yingluck Shinawatra invariably aired his unwavering support for Move Forward leader/prime minister-designate Pita Limjaroenrat to take the helm of government following the nationwide election in which his progressive camp has become the No.1 largest elected party whilst the Pheu Thai has come out as the second largest one.
His comment was apparently made in response to sustained speculation that the Pheu Thai might probably lead a brand new coalition of their own with the Palang Pracharath headed by Prawit Wongsuwan and others being included but no longer with the Move Forward if Pita eventually failed to get enough votes from lawmakers to take the helm of government.
All Pheu Thai MPs who are apparently obliged to vote for Pita in a joint House/Senate session later this month might probably jump onto such a new bandwagon at a later date, leaving behind the current Move Forward-led coalition if Pita failed to get at least 376 yea votes from the MPs and senators to become the country’s 30th prime minister, partisan sources said.
Supposedly given support from most of the senators in addition to a minority of 188 MPs, Prawit could possibly be named prime minister in rivalry against Pita and then, if he eventually made it, manipulate the setting up of a brand new coalition into which the Pheu Thai would be brought at a later date, they said.
The 250 senators, all of whom were handpicked by Prawit himself and de facto Ruam Thai Sang Chart boss/caretaker prime minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, will be playing a pivotal role in the picking of a prime minister in accordance with the military-designed constitution.
