WITH the Thai dessert mango and sticky rice grabbing international attention after rapper Milli ate some of it while performing at Coachella music festival in the US, a creperie in Uthai Thani province has innovatively come up with a crepe that is topped with this much-loved Thai treat, Amarin TV said today (Apr. 25).
Milli, whose real name is Danupha Khanatheerakul, 19, ate some of this popular dessert from a bowl while performing a song called Mango Sticky Rice last weekend.
With Milli’s song and performance driving up sales of this dessert at all the shops and stalls nationwide, Ms. Pim Chamthong, 31, who runs a creperie in this lower northern province created a new crepe topped with mango and sticky rice with a recipe from folks of her father’s generation.
Sold at 30 baht each, the newly-created crepe has attracted more customers to her shop, which has been operating for two years now.
Pim related that she comes from a family of farmers but with the high cost of farming and suffering losses almost every year and being unable to get a job after the Covid-19 pandemic started two years go, she learnt how to make Japanese crepes through the Internet and after becoming good at it opened this shop.
On offer are 30 sweet and savoury fillings and toppings and this helped her creperie quickly become popular with young children and other people living in her village in Khao Kwang Thong subdistrict in Nong Chang district.
Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha said after Milli’s stunning performance that his government is moving to list mango and sticky rice with Unesco as an intangible Thai cultural heritage, Thansettakij said.
He added that the government is going to accelerate Thailand’s soft power arising from its food and cultural heritage to further propel the country on the global stage.
However Milli has criticised this government’s handling of the Covid pandemic and was in July last year summoned to the police station to acknowledge defamation charges and fined 2,000 baht.
