THE PUBLIC was warned to be more careful after it was revealed that as many as 21,506 cyber crime cases were filed at https://www.thaipoliceonline.com in February with losses totalling 2,493,842,459 baht, Matichon newspaper said today (Mar. 9).
Mr. Karom Phonphonklang, deputy spokesperson of the Prime Minister’s Office, said this works out to be 85,944,56 baht cyber scam losses per day.
Altogether 26,621 bank accounts holding 585,162,740 baht had been frozen out of 1,592,427,042 baht requested.
The top five cyber scams reported are as follows:
– Fraud in buying or selling products or services (not a network) – damage totalled 198,614,971 baht;
– Tricked into transferring money to earn extra income – losses reached 326,172,595 baht;
– Deceived into borrowing money – damage reached 106,624,305 baht;
– Deceived into investing through the computer system – losses added up to 1,151,441,270 baht;
– Call centre scammers got away with 233,274,414 baht.
“I urge the people to not be fooled and become a scammer’s victim. If you have been tricked you can report the problem online at https://www.thaipoliceonline.com or inquire at numbers 1441 or 08-1866-3000,” Karom said.
