SILOM road was reopened at 6.10 p.m. today (April 13) after Bang Rak district officials temporarily banned entry to participate in Songkran festival activities due to overcrowding, Amarin TV and TV Channel 7 said.
It was estimated that over 200,000 revellers had flocked to Silom when the entry ban was announced at 5.45 p.m. and there was fear of severe suffocation.
However, a little later officials announced that the situation had returned to normal but even so a large number of revellers continued entering this road and they were urged to exercise caution for their own safety.
Access to the area is supervised with officials restricting entry and exit and limiting entry times.
Meanwhile Suvarnabhumi Airport held a traditional Thai music performance to mark Songkran festival at the baggage claim hall of arrivals area to the delight of passengers, TV Channel 7 said.
Both Thai and foreign passengers enjoyed the performance and took photos as souvenirs.
Other cultural activities such as Thai massage and demonstration on making herbal inhalers, dried potpourri sachets, garlands, and leaf and Chula kites are taking place at Concourse D, both East and West wings, during April 13-15.
