THAI villagers in Tak province today (Oct. 7) found the bodies of a Chinese man and woman that had floated down Moei river and washed up on the Thai bank from the location of a new scam city south of Myawaddy town on the Myanmar side, TV Channel 7 said.
These villagers, in Phop Phra district, said the bodies of the Chinese man and woman, approximately 30 to 35 years of age, were clad in only their underwear.
The Myanmar zone across the Moei river is under the influence of Democratic Karen Buddhist Army (DKBA) and villagers are certain that the deceased were Chinese, as groups of Chinese and foreign scammers remain active in the area under DKBA protection.
Thai local officials said the Chinese duo likely did not die in active combat but rather from acts of violence, such as rape or physical assault. Some victims had likely been killed for disobeying orders or attempting to escape after failing to meet online scamming quotas — incidents that occur frequently – with most of them being Chinese.
Villagers frequently find bodies, particularly during the rainy season. In several instances, the bodies had been dumped into Mae Kala creek which flows into Moei river with some weighed down underwater, only to surface during the high-water season.
The incidents occurred near a scammer city complex at Doi Daeng (Red mountain), opposite Phop Phra subdistrict, Phop Phra district, and at a mountain pass bordering Doi Daeng and Wale Kee, south of Myawaddy.
Officials also mentioned a previous case involving a 29-year-old Chinese woman who was lured via WeChat to meet an online boyfriend in Bangkok. She was subsequently abducted, bound, and taken by van to Ban Waley, then smuggled across the Moei river to Myanmar. There, she was sold to Doi Daeng scammer network. After being raped, she managed to escape, fleeing back across the Moei river to seek help from Thai authorities.
Sources indicated that the influential figure overseeing this new scammer zone is a high-ranking leader (number three in the hierarchy) of DKBA. The site is a new scammer city under construction in a mountain pass area between Ban Waley (Myanmar side) and Ban Sor See Mian. Six buildings with blue roofs have already been completed and are equipped with massive power generators that set off a deafening roar echoing through the forest.
Officials also mentioned a rush to mobilise workers for the construction of more than ten additional buildings, with Chinese nationals actively supervising operations. Foreign nationals have also been observed at the site. Among them are people from India, Pakistan, Africa, Cambodia, and Laos who were relocated to this site from an area opposite Ban Ku Mai Tha Sung village in Mae Sot subdistrict, Mae Sot district, after it was seized by the Myanmar military.
