MP unlikely to testify on own spouse-turned-scam-suspect

By Thai Newsroom Reporters

BHUMJAITHAI MP Suchada Zhang Tansap will be very unlikely to testify before a House committee tomorrow (Oct.7) over yet-unsettled suspicions of her spouse, Taiyang Zhang, having been covertly involved in a transnational money-laundering scam which might probably cost her the status of being an elected lawmaker.

Suchada today (Oct.6) declined to confirm or dismiss reporters’ persistent question as to whether she is going to give testimony before the House Committee on Law, Justice & Human Rights as earlier summoned by the House committee chair/People’s MP Rangsiman Rome tomorrow (Oct.7) and excused that she would sooner or later make a response “once and for all” to any scandals surrounding her spouse, an Australian national of Chinese descent, and the couple’s sources of income in regard to some 1.9 billion baht in shared assets earlier formally declared to the Thai authorities.

However, the first-time lawmaker of the Bhumjaithai, core of the current coalition government, will be very unlikely to show up and testify at parliament at any given time soon, according to a partisan source.

Taiyang has been invariably suspected of covert involvement in the alleged transnational scam with a yet-unspecified amount of laundered money from British Virgin Islands-based online casinos, namely Natural Nine BV Casinos, which he has reportedly owned and in the debatable handout of 1.4 billion baht in loan to a Singaporean-based crypto trading firm, namely Three Arrows Capital, which was declared bankrupt by court in 2022.

His former associates previously noted in crypto industry, namely Stefan Qin of Virgil Capital and Sam Bankman-Fried of FTX and Alameda Research, had been arrested on fraud charges and sentenced to jail terms in the United States.

Meanwhile, the Bhumjaithai MP, who currently represents a northeastern constituency of Chaiyapum, has been accused by an activist lawyer of breaking the laws by failing to declare a pricey luxury watch of her possession to the National Anti-Corruption Commission as part of her 1.9 billion baht assets. The allegation involving her Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, worth about 3.3 million baht, has already been filed for investigation by the anti-graft agency.

If found guilty as charged in case of her spouse allegedly conspiring on the laundering of money from crypto or online casino businesses or the allegedly concealed possession of her luxury watch, she could possibly be deprived of her MP status and banned from engaging in political activity at all levels for a number of years.
