IN WHAT was seen as an unlikely phenomenon, former maverick MP Chalong Riewraeng today (Aug.10) literally gunned down and killed Nonthaburi provincial administration head Thongchai Yenprasert and his driver in the premises of the latter’s office adjacent to the northern outskirts of Bangkok.
The three-time, former lawmaker of Nonthaburi turned himself in to the police after he had killed Thongchai and his unnamed driver with his own handgun in broad daylight because, he said, the provincial administration head had bluntly refused to settle a sum of 11 million baht in debt which he had purportedly owed him.
In custody of the police, Chalong told reporters that Thongchai’s driver had drawn a gun toward him whilst they were riding in a van in the premises of the slain provincial administration head’s office, immediately prompting the ex-MP armed with a handgun of his own to shoot out in self-defence, killing both men. Thongchai was pronounced dead at a hospital whilst his driver was found dead on the spot.
Chalong contested an MP constituency of Nonthaburi under under the Pheu Thai tickets in the 2011 election after which he was deposed by court of his legislative status due to his having submitted falsified statements of his assets and consequently banned from political activity for a five-year time until 2018. He sought re-election to no avail in the 2019 and 2023 elections under the Palang Pracharath and Bhumjaithai banners respectively.
