Beware of enforcing Khmer eviction deadline today: Academic

WITH today (Oct. 10) being the deadline the Thai military set for Cambodians encroaching on Thai territory, particularly at Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaeo villages in Sa Kaeo province, to leave a noted Thai academic warned that Cambodia has prepared for this and some of its military units could possibly start a clash, Amarin TV said.

Prof. Panathep Puapongphan, dean of the College of Oriental Medicine at Rangsit University and president of Yam Fa Paendin Foundation, also warned that Cambodia plans to bring the Interim Observer Team to the border area today to make their country be seen as the victim and Thailand the perpetrator.

As Cambodia has planned a response, no action should be taken today and instead the operation be launched approximately a week from now with the date kept secret, he said, while urging the public to give the military time to monitor the situation.

Panathep added that he is fully confident Lt. Gen. Worayot Leungsuwan, commander of the First Army Region, would ensure the return of Thai territory.

That Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul asserted that his government never set the Oct. 10 deadline shows that he has taken the right step in letting the military take charge of the situation.

Yet Anutin has to be cautious in delegating decision-making authority to the military because the world is watching.

Regarding influencers attempting to build a fence or encourage Thai protesters to go to the border to confront Cambodian protesters, Panathep said the Memorandum of Understanding does not prohibit citizens from building fences but does rein in government officials or agencies from doing so or altering the border area’s status.

Meanwhile Cambodia sent a letter to Thailand to halt a mine clearing operation scheduled to take place at  Ban Nong Chan and Ban Nong Ya Kaeo villages in Sa Kaeo today, PPTVHD 36 said.

Burapha Task Force had sent a letter to Cambodia’s 51st Infantry Division stating its intention to undertake this operation today with the latter sending a reply at 10.25 p.m. last night to desist from doing so.

The Khmers said undertaking this operation would violate  the spirit of the first special meeting of the General Border Committee (GBC) on September 10, 2025.
