Monitor lizards show up at Govt House

A QUIET morning at the Government House amid ongoing moves to vote for a new prime minister and also possibly dissolving the House of Representatives and holding an election turned exciting when two large monitor lizards crawled into the compound, Amarin TV said this afternoon (Sep. 4).

One of these creatures soon disappeared into the bushes while the other stopped on the lawn at Thai Khu Fah building for nearly an hour, seemingly showing off. Of course reporters and photographers quickly snapped photos of this reptile.

Monitor lizards, known locally as “hia,” hold a unique place in Thai culture. These reptiles often stir mixed feelings among locals due to their symbolic meanings and real-life encounters, according to touristsecrets.com.

Symbol of Bad Luck

In Thai folklore, monitor lizards are often seen as harbingers of bad luck. The word “hia” is even used as a curse word, reflecting the negative connotations associated with these creatures.

Guardians of temples

Despite their bad reputation, some temples consider monitor lizards as protectors. They are believed to guard sacred spaces from evil spirits, adding a layer of complexity to their cultural significance,

Aside from the monitor lizards creating commotion the only other activities at Government House were Deputy Prime Minister/ Minister of Digital Economy and Society Prasert Chantarawongthong chairing a meeting of the Subcommittee on the Operations of the Village and Urban Community Funds Project in the morning and a meeting of the Digital Economy and Society Development Fund Executive Committee in the afternoon.

Foreign Affairs Minister Maris Sangiampongsa also came to the Government House to hold a meeting with Dr. Prommin Lertsuridej, secretary-general to the Prime Minister, for an hour.

Meanwhile former prime minister Paethongtarn Shinawatra has already moved all documents and personal belongings from the Prime Minister’s Office leaving only some furniture behind. Some officials were also seen carrying several large empty plastic boxes up Thai Khu Fa building.
