Ancient temple closed, Cambodians need a visa to visit: Second Army Region Chief

THE FENCE along the border under the control of the Second Army Region is permanent and the ancient temple Prasat Ta Muen Thom is closed with Cambodians requiring a visa to visit the monument, TV Channel 7 said today (Sep. 2).

Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang, commander of Second Army Region, said: “The entire Chong-arnma and Prasat Ta Muen Thom area is completely fenced in, if you come and touch, you have to be prepared for the consequences because I consider it touching Thai sovereignty.

“If you want to know what will happen, come and touch it.”

He confirmed that the barbed-wire fence around Prasat Ta Muen Thom will not be removed and Cambodians would need a passport and visa to enter it.

During a special lecture at Thammasat University he said that he would not mount a coup d’etat and would not meddle with politics after retiring at the end of this month.

“But what will we do with those who will be in power? We’ll have to rely on Thais to help select good people, I’m counting the days till my  retirement – I will not get involved in politics,” he said.

A male student asked for his opinion on the military meddling in politics and he replied that the armed forces looked more dignified if they stay out of politics.

“What happens in the government and in parliament is your business. But don’t use your power to order the military, because the military has a duty to protect the nation according to the constitution,” he said.
