A TENSE incident took place at Chong-arnma market in Nam Yuen district of Ubon Ratchathani late afternoon today (Aug. 5) with five Cambodian soldiers caught cutting two rows of concertina wire which the Thai side had installed to clearly mark the boundary, but they withdrew upon being told to do so, Naewna newspaper said.
At 4.30 p.m. Ranger Unit 2310 spotted the five Cambodian soldiers dismantling the concertina wire and ordered them to immediately stop and leave the area and they complied and did so. The rangers then fixed the boundary barbed wire.
This incident took place in a highly sensitive area which Thai troops had recaptured before the ceasefire deadline on the night of July 28. They had removed over 80 houses, shops and other structures built at this community next to Chong-arnma checkpoint as this is Thailand’s sovereign territory.
Lt. Gen. Boonsin Phadklang, commander of the Second Army Region, and Maj. Gen. Winthai Suvari, the army spokesperson, had previously clarified that Chong-arnma area is clearly Thailand’s sovereign territory and no further violations of the memorandum of understanding 2000 will be tolerated.
