AS the bosses of a scam centre at Myanmar’s Myawaddy township, across the border from Thai town Mae Sot, have come under pressure 32 Indonesians managed to flee to Thailand today (Jan. 19), TV Channel 7 said.
A joint patrol of the border by Rajamanu Task Force, Mae Sot and Immigration police and local government officials came across this big group of Indonesians, 30 men and two women, walking along a natural passage to Thailand.
They all said they had been working in Myawaddy but no longer wanted to continue doing so, thus decided to illegally cross over to Thailand through a natural channel to return to their country.
They were all taken to Mae Sot police station for questioning and legal procedure.
Local military intelligence unit found out that this group of Indonesians managed to escape because last Wednesday (Jan. 15) Karen Border Guard Forces (BGF) and Democratic Karen Benevolent Army (DKBA) held a meeting with Chinese businessmen on transnational crime, fraud and human trafficking in Myawaddy.
As their bosses had come under pressure this group of Indonesians took the opportunity to flee.
Earlier Pol. Gen. Thatchai Pitaneelabut, head of the Centre for the Protection of Children, Women, Families, Human Trafficking Prevention and Suppression and Fisheries, said Chinese model Mr. Yang Zheqi, whose father Mr. Yang Haitao flew to Thailand to search for him as he had disappeared at Mae Sot after flying from Beijing to Suvarnabhumi Airport on Dec. 21, had been rescued from Myawaddy and gone back to his country.
This followed BGF having helped free popular Chinese actor Xingxing on Jan. 7 after he was lured to this Myawaddy scam hub on Jan. 3.
