NAVY helicopters and fire trucks were sent this morning (Jan. 18) to help put out a forest fire that broke out on Khao Krathing near Bang Saray in Chonburi last night with the public reassured that it is being contained and will likely be put out today, Naewna newspaper said.
Navy Commander Adm. Jirapol Wongwit said both personnel and equipment had been sent to help fight this forest fire and it had already been brought under control since last night.
Navy helicopters and fire trucks are surveying the area because two fires broke out in a short span of time but it is expected to be extinguished today.
This forest fire has to be investigated, he said, adding that the navy was asked to help out after the blaze got close to housing estates.
The fire erupted and spread widely on this hill at around 7.30 p.m. last night with fire trucks from many agencies mobilized to contain and prevent it from spreading to nearby houses.
An inspection revealed that it had started near some residences and firefighting teams were fighting it all night. It was not yet clear whether this is a natural phenomenon or arson.
Mr. Anusak Piri-amorn, Sattahip district chief, went to the fire zone to monitor the situation himself while a command centre comprising Mrs. Thanapat Akkhaputthathip, deputy mayor of Klet Kaew subdistrict municipality, and navy officers had been set up.
